We’re all busy. If you want to become a better hockey player, finding time to fit hockey training into your busy schedule is essential. Nobody ever said that feeding the monster would be easy… it isn’t.
How do we program in summer training with other activities?
If you are participating in other sports such as soccer, lacrosse, softball, power skating, hockey clinics, camps, etc., etc., what can we do to fit in our hockey training and workouts? Or what do we do if we’re working a summer job? The short podcast episode below offers some great tips.
Tips for Adapting Your Training Schedule
- Avoid Duplicates — Still Do Everything Else!
- Don’t skip hockey specific training! Every player should be scheduling on-ice skating / skills development, off-ice stickhandling and off-ice shooting.
- Schedule a consistent time for doing your hockey workouts. First thing in the morning will ensure that you get things done. Coach Keia regularly does her hockey workouts at 6 AM every day. These leaves the entire day free for everything else you need to do. It’s also a great way to get energized for your day.
- Organize tomorrow, TODAY. By planning out your schedule a day in advance, you’ll usually be able to find time to fit everything in. This really helps to set your priorities so that you don’t miss anything that is important.
- It’s okay to move things to another day.
- If you’re doing multiple workouts or working out in addition to playing sports, make sure that you are eating enough healthy food, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep.
Today’s Assignment:
- Complete today’s workout on the TeamBuildr app. Be sure to mark each exercise complete as you finish it. Depending on your schedule (other sports, work, etc.) it is okay to complete the exercises on another day or even substitute an alternate workout provided that the difficultly level is similar. Please make note of any substitutions or switches as part of the daily check in item in the TeamBuildr app.
- Think of a specific way that you can adapt your schedule. Post your answer to the team WhatsApp group. For example:
- If you have two soccer games this week, what could you do?
- If you have a softball tournament this weekend, what could you do?
- If you are at a hockey camp this week, what could you do?
- If you are on vacation this week, what could you do?
