In a hockey game, the team that possesses the puck will change hundreds of times.
Being FASTER in transitions from offense to defense and defense to offense will usually determine the winner of the game.
KEY: Offensive play begins as soon as we gain possession of the puck.
When we first gain the puck, we need to attack quickly BEFORE the other team is in a good defensive position. This applies to every player on the ice, not just the puck carrier.
KEY: Defensive play starts as soon as the puck is lost.
When we first lose the puck, there are no positions. Everyone has to urgently defend.
NO SLOTHS!
Note: For very young players, it's okay to have all your players running around the puck like a swarm of bees. This is the fastest way to learn the value of urgency in transitions.
Think of 5 examples of a transition that happens in a game. How can we win these transitions?
