Game 3: Fundamental Checking Habits

Good checking habits keep you in the play!

Habit #1: Direct Pressure

  1. Go for it! We go AGGRESSIVELY right at the puck carrier.
  2. No time. No space.
  3. If you are the closest player, go full speed.

Habit #2: Good Stick

  1. Extended stick OUT early.
  2. Stick on the puck like a magnet.
  3. Aggressive stick blocking the passing lanes.
  4. Stick stays on the ice (be patient).

Habit #3: Face Up

It's okay to get beat, but it's important how you react…

  1. Always face the play. Never turn your back.
  2. She stops, you stop.
  3. Continue to battle. Relentless “dog on a bone”.

Habit #4: Track Back Hard

  1. Start early.
  2. Catch the next man.
  3. Battle for good defensive position. (Remember “Good Stick”)
  4. The best way to communicate is with your skates.

Habit #5: Immediately Attack the Net on Turnovers

  1. Attack the net or push the puck up the ice before the defense can get set.
