Day 32 – Your “Go To” Move

This is the 32nd day of our team’s virtual mid-season training camp. Each day, there will be a short assignment for you to do to continue your development. These assignments are mandatory for players and coaches. Parents are also encouraged to participate.

Everyone should have a “Go To” breakaway move! One that you can use to reliably score most of the time when you get a breakaway. One you use whenever you really need to score.

Ideally, it should also be a move that you can use in different areas of the ice and in different situations.

Here is one of the best, and simplest, breakaway moves. Every player should learn to do this move.

The “Gagner” Move

Sam Gagner was drafted 6th overall by the Edmonton Oilers 6th overall in 2007. He played seven years for Edmonton and has since played for Arizona, Philadelphia, Columbus, Vancouver and is now with Detroit.

He is generally known as a power play and shootout specialist. On February 2, 2012, Gagner had an 8-point game (4 G + 4 A) against Chicago.

How to do the “Gagner” Move

Today’s Assignment:

  1. Practice the “Gagner” move at home or at the rink. How would you practice this move if you don’t have space to move around? Where else on the ice could you use this move and how might you modify it in other places? Post your answers to the team WhatsApp group.
  1. Ask a friend of parent to video you practicing the “Gagner” move. Post your video to the team WhatsApp group.
